Here's one that's not terribly common knowledge.
The Romans wanted the British Isles badly in part because they truly believed that Neptune (Roman version of Poseidon, same God, different name) resided in the waters off those islands.

Hercules tossed a pizza into the... Aegean sea, various underwater inhabitants including some squid, shrimp and shell fish were just about to eat it when all of a sudden...
Poseidon simultaneously harpooned the lot with his trident giving birth to the first 'Neptune Pizza'.
He then divided it into 50 pieces and shared with the numnads or whatever one of the girls above called them.

Posiedon was obviously the god of the sea which he was assigned by Zeus after cronus' downfall.
He was strongly connected with the Atlantis legends aswell.
His son triton is the bases of the character triton in The little mermaid.
Posiedon himself was not actually a merperson. Like most sea dieties he doesnt take a huge part in the olympian pathenon even though he might be considered part of it.
