And then when I choose not to befriend people like that, I get accused of thinking I'm better than everyone. And they, of course, go into b.itchy.-mode. And they just prove my point. That they are unhappy with themselves and they just try to bring everyone around them, down with them.

Some women are bitchy for no reason but some are not !!!! Lets not categorize every woman....You may just bring it out of the best of them....

If people think you are acting "better than everyone," you should not let it bother you. You just might be better than them. I have met people like that. That go into b" mode. I personally would not want to be there friend. You are correct in assuming that they are unhappy with themselves and are just trying to make everyone around them as miserable as they are. I must say though, that there are b' men as well. Although it is more common in us ladies.

Well women get ' bitchy for many reasons. Jealousy for some , low self-esteem which is part and parcel to jealousy, pms, bad attitudes, herd mentality.

What is it you DO exactly to provoke that kind of response?

There's an old expression my mum used to say six of one , half dozen of another. Maybe it's a little bit you as well as a little bit them.
