I personally can't recall being able to spell at all when I was five years old. Maybe your comparison is exaggerated a bit? Also there is the ability to "Check Spelling" so maybe it is not an age related issue, but simply one of motivation versus laziness, or a lack of proper articulation.

Kids these days learn NOTHING in school! My nephew is a senior and he can't spell simple words like single and feel. Come on now!
The teachers pass them just to get rid of them!

Because it's like computer slang. Computer lingo, whatever you'd like to call it.
I don't think they're trying to be immature or anything it's just faster to type like that. Some people type too fast and make mistakes.

Because they want to make it short. Instead of doing for they do 4 or are r. It just makes it so much quicker.
