I have a two acre yard in an urban setting. It has been described by others as "park-like". However, here and there exist bare areas where no grass is growing. Some of these are in part shade/part sun, while others are mostly shade. What are your recommendations for 1) kind of grass seed to use?, 2) how best to plant the seed?, amd 3) do I need to cover the seed to protect it from birds, etc.?

Its kind of hard to grow grass in shady areas, but is possible. All it needs is tlc. The type of grass really depends on the type of grass you already have. You dont want patches of different grass, it might be noticable when the grass grows in. If you dont care much about patches of different grass, family dollars grass grows good, and fast. Looks nice too. Not to mention cheap. 1st thing you want to do is loosen up the dirt in those bare spots. sometimes grass dont grow cause the dirt is too compacted. Drop alot of seed, more then you think is nessecary. Then throw a little more down. Rake it in to cover them a little bit, helps birds from eating them. And if they get some its ok you dropped alot. Just chase em off if you see them. Keep it moist do not let it dry out. Before you know it you'll have grass there. After it grows in, water how you regularly water the rest of your grass. Dont mow till it reaches an inch.

Go to a reputable garden center or seed center and ask for their assistance in picking a type of grass seed for your growing conditions. In my area, mixtures that are 50-25% Kentucky blue grass and 50-75% creeping fescue are used for semi-shade areas. You won't find any grass that grows well in fully shaded areas. Use a shade ground cover in those areas instead.

1. Strip the old turf from the area. If you had any kind of weed problem such as crab grass, treat the lawn with a systemic herbicide to kill all weeds that spread through their root system.
2. Add good quality topsoil to raise the level of ground (so that you won't have an uneven lawn where you have added the new seed). Buy from a reputable dealer that sells topsoil that is free of weed seeds.
3. Level the soil area and pack using a lawn roller.
4. Lightly rake the soil just prior to seeding. The soil must be at least 15 degrees celsius before you should seed. Don't seed when it is very hot.
5. Moisten the site before seeding. Divide the seed in half. Spread half the seed in one direction. Then spread the other half of the seed working in a different direction.
6. Lightly rake the seeded area to cover the seed. Rake across the slope so that water does not run down the furrows and wash away the seed.
7. Lightly roll the seed to press the seed into the soil. Good seed/soil contact is needed for germination.
8. Gently moisten the seed. Once germination begins, you must keep the soil moist. Depending on the weather, it may need watering more than once a day. Use a fine mist sprinkler to water. Don't let puddles form, or the grass will wash away.
9. You don't need to cover the seed with a mulch such as peat moss or chopped straw unless you have planted on a slope or want to use it to help keep the soil moist.
10. The lawn can be mowed once it is about 3" long. Be sure the soil is dry before mowing to avoid compacting the soil.
11. About six weeks after seeding, you can fertilize the lawn with a phosphorus fertilizer such as 16-20-0.
