I am buying wood baseball bats for my kids. Two have cracked already. I would like to know the strongest type of wood for a bat, and whether any special finishes make the bat stronger. Also is a thicker handle better?
Thanks.

Any thoughts on the black glossy finishes on some wood bats? Do they prevent breakage?

Well Maple is said to be one of the strongiest bats out there.

Here is a website that could help you out. It Lets you know about the different bats and what would fit.

I believe ash and maple are the strongest. Thin handles can be gripped easier and allow for more "snap" by the wrists, however they do break more often. Make sure ur kids take care of the bat, keep it indoors. If they are gonna use it just for practice or at the batting cage they can tape up the barrel and this will help it stay in 1 piece, but obviously this cant be done if they are going to use it for a game. So I would go with ash or maple and unless its a surprise take ur kids w/ you and let them decide what kind of handle they want.
Hope Ive helped. Good luck!

Ash is the strongest but it doesnt have the elasticity of other woods.

Mahogany is the best bat, bar none, but very expensive.

buy a composite bat. its a wood bat with a composite finish on it. they are more expensive, but won't break. we use them in our wood bat league and they seem to last for about 2 seasons before they lose their 'pop'.

Composite bats are good, or Baum bats are good too. You can find them online, they don't break.
