Alright, when you open it up, it will ask you if you want to use a template. Just pick to one that is right for you. You can also choose a background. Go to view>master>slide master. Slide master is used to make a template that you can apply to all your other slides. You can also set up your font, font sizes, font colors, and anything else you plan on using regularly. If you want to set up a background to make all of your slides look like they belong together, right click on the slide, choose background, and from there you can choose a color or input your own picture. You can also click on slide design after right clicking on slide. Ppt already has some nice looking premade templates complete with fonts. After you have your master set up, click close master view. Each time you click new slide, a new one will pop up with the info from your master, and all you have to do is type your info and insert your pictures. Good luck!

A couple of key points -

1. Don't use too many fonts on one slide. Stick with 1-2 fonts.
2. Don't make the font too large, or too small.
3. Don't use too many words. Slides need to be brief, clear, succinct, so don't write your whole paragraph, just key points. People can't read lots of words up on screen.
4. Prepare your presentation like an outline: Intro slide, background info slide, key points slide, summary slide.
5. Don't put up too much information - as I said above, use key points only, slides are meant to emphasise or highlight what you're saying, not present every word of what you're saying.
6. The templates in PowerPoint are great, just pick one that suits your topic, and start playing!

Good luck!

Just open the program and follow the directions
Or you can open any presentation as "new" - and change the stuff for yours - this is how I did my first :PP

Start with a title page.

Using PPT is fairly easy. For each paragraph use bullets to tell people what you are saying.
