Factoring, like in the equation below, is usually done by mental thought combined with trial-and-error.

3x² - 2x - 5 =
(3x - 5)(x + 1)

If you're looking for the equation's roots: Once you have the two binomials, equal each one to "0" to find the roots:

3x - 5 = 0
3x = 5
x = 5/3

x + 1 = 0
x = -1

So, your root solutions are 5/3 and -1. To check:

3(5/3)² - 2(5/3) - 5 = 3(-1)² - 2(-1) - 5
3(25/9) - 10/3 - 5 = 3(1) - (-2) - 5
75/9 - 10/3 - 5 = 3 + 2 - 5
75/9 - 30/9 - 45/9 = 0
75/9 - 75/9 = 0
0 = 0
