I'm really looking for a good book to read. What's the best book you've ever read?

I think the idea of a "favorite book" is overrated. Most readers have MANY favorite books, depending on the time in their life in which they read it, their frame of mind, education, interests, and many other things.

I can give you several books that I have enjoyed immensely at different points in my life.

The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Possession by AS Byatt
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak

Each of these books appeals to a different part of the intellect and imagination, but each are masterpieces in their own right. Try one out. You won't be disappointed.

I love to read. We should own stock in Amazon because we are always having books arrive in the mail!

Out of all the books I have read--I enjoy each of them for different reasons, however I think the most rewarding book I have ever read and highly recommend to everyone is:

The Ultimate Gift by Jim Stovall.

I think anyone that reads this will be benefited by the message it presents to us. There will soon be a movie out based on the book.

Happy reading and enjoy whatever book you decide upon! Reading is always a journey into a new and different reality!

That's a tough one, to just pick one, so I'll give you a few.

1. The 5 People You Meet In Heaven- Mitch Albom
2. The Wedding- Nicholas Sparks
3. Where The Heart Is - Billie Letts
4. The Notebook- Nicholas Sparks

Happy Reading!

It's hard to pick just one; I like so many for so many different reasons.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks stands out as a fave, a story of true love. Great book, great movie.

I just finished reading The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. It was so good. It's set in 1964, and it's about a doctor who delivers his wife's twins in a blizzard. One of the babies is healthy and the other one has Down Syndrome. He gives the Down Syndrome baby to the nurse and tells her to take it away to an institution, but instead she moves away and raises the girl as her own. It's all about secrets and what they can do to our lives. Great writing.

Any of James Patterson's books are good, if you like murder mysteries.

"Motoring With Muhammad" by Eric Hansen. This is the true story of Hansen's travels in Yemen, the worlds longest standing Muslim nation. It gives insight into both the daily life in Yemen and Hansen's self-discovery. Hansen is not necessarily that likable but he is intrepid and admirable in his willingness to experience the world in all its wonder. Or for fiction my favorite would have to be "The Wars" by Timothy Findlay. An examination of what it is to really be a hero during the first world war. A disturbing, graceful and pitiably short book.

Wish I knew where you're at, so to speak. Even an age category might help.

But to answer your question while ignoring the subject of your first statement:
"The Soul of the Desert" by Sir Aleister Crowley - short personal philospohical treatise;
"Crow Road" by Iain M. Banks - a mid length central character novel;
"Barbarians" by Terry Jones - a mid length historical review of Roman history from the other side's point of view;
"The Local Library Shelves" by The Friendly Staff - a browse and select collection of multi-facetted impact: highly recommended!

Ciao.

A dirty job by Christopher Moore was very entertaining. It is about a man that looses his wife and subsequently becomes "death" (one of the reapers helpers). Believe it or not it is a comedy.

Anything by Jane Austen, or Charles dickens is good.

If you like mysteries, Kate White wrote a book called a body to die for that was interesting. I private eye goes to stay with a friend at a spa, when a murder interrupts her stay, and she tries to figure out the circumstances.

Mary Higgins-Clark or Carrol Higgins-Clark are also very good mystery writers.

I have two favorites:

East of Eden and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

They're both excelent. East of Eden is pretty long, but it's pretty intense. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is really witty and very funny. It has quite a bit of British humor, if you're into that. If you saw the awful movie, don't let it fool you. The book is great.
