these are the same numbers! convert from feet to inches and inches to feet! why when i multiply the inches and convert to feet it's different than when i multiply feet and convert to inches? this has me very confused! please try this and tell me what i'm doing wrong! asap please!!!!!

It's because the answer is not inches or feet but cubic inches or cubic feet. If you multiply 12 inches x 12 inches you have an area that is 144 inches square or 1 square foot. This would be a square.
Since you are multiplying a third time you are referring to cubic inches. A cube that is 12 inches on each side - a box if you will - is one foot on each side. So 1 cubic foot = 12x12x12 cubic inches. So 243 x 12 x 12 = 34992.

You forgot to divide by 12 three times. 12 x 12 = 144
34,992 / 144 = 243

2.25*2.25*4=20.25ft^3
to convert to in^3, you need to multiply by 12^3
