my son is 15 years old and has aspergers syndrome.(which for him, the biggest problem is social awkwardness) he is obsessed by computers and has been since he was about 4. he is now a sophomore in high school and we are discussing with him career ideas and options for schooling.i asked him what he loves most about computers and he said he likes to create. he said he would be most interested in game designing or web design. he is incredibly creative and artistic.( i am an artist as well)
the question i have is, knowing that he is not very social, but is very creative and computer savvy, which would be a good avenue for him to steer toward in the computer world as a career? what kind of schooling would be required? what are the job prospects for that field?
thank you so much for your input :)

Apple is best for artistic creativity, but stick with PC for gaming.

Have him learn ".NET" programming for the best future in industrial computer applications. That's because pretty soon most process equipment will be communicating to networks, cell networks, and control rooms via .NET technology.

Stay away from a career in game design unless he is a total wiz-kid. It's like a career in the NBA--you better be among the best.

Other programming that will land jobs is C++ and Java.

But for the best jobs he should study machine programming which is known as CAM. For this he should study AutoCAD, SolidWorks (really cool), and VirtualGibbs.

Machine programming and advanced 3D computer drafting can land him a $50K - $60K job almost anywhere in the industrialized world right after finishing training.

It's commonly called now "New Media" and it integrates graphic design, web design and website technologies into one package.
Some two year schools offer a new media program, here (Maine) it's currently offered only at the 4 year University level.
The job market for this is a bit better than most technical positions at the moment. Everyone has a website and need designers, web programmers, database specialists to help them keep it up and running.
Keep in mind though that, all aspects of technology require some sort of communication with others, that's just the nature of the beast.

A good place to research are job posting sites like Monster, HotJobs, etc. to get a feel for education levels expected and the level of communication the position entails.

Best of luck.

Graphic design is a flooded field. I'd say for him to get into creating software, software design, like security, which is something which would be needed more and more in future.

Your son can start now as a freelance programmer. He can sign up for an account on www.rentacoder.com and acquire clients.
Your son should focus on .net development
Usually a 4 year degree is required for most positions but if he can take online classes for .net and acquire his certifications online.
