yes they can, bouncing a check is technically stealing, she is lucky they didn't call the police! the fed has giving the authority to charge fees rather than take these people to jail because there are too many to keep up with. no sign has to be posted, it may even be on the reciept. the establishment will have a set of standards and that 25 bucks will be in writing, i promise you.
tell her to make sure she has the money before she writes a check, especially with the new check 21 system, we don't have to wait three to five days for a check to clear, it can be used electronically and taken out within 24 hours

that is standard procedures for a bounced check the bank charges a fee because of the costs for processing the bad check and the business charges a fee for the processing of the bad check but sometimes if you are not a person that has a lot of problems with overdraft fees the bank will reverse the charges if you go and talk to someone in the bank.

Actually, from what I understand, it is illegal for a company to charge a fee to the consumer for a returned check (even though most places do). At least that is the way it is here in Texas. I would check with the Attorney General's office in your state to verify that it is legal.

They sure can. She should have to pay for the fee that the bank will charge them for the NSF check.

As far as I know, it doesn't have to be posted. It's at the establishment's discretion.
