why can't i find any multiplayer games (internet tcp/ip for direct play)?

Um, try some thing called Age of Empires III , maybe you might find some people there. I always do =)

Microsoft used to use the Zone, but I think they discontinued using or sponsoring it a while ago.

I think there's a new place, but I'm not sure. Love that game, by the way.
