Whenever I hold the door open I usually hold it just for a few seconds. I think that a good distance that a person has to be not to hold open a door for them is about 7 feet.

Usually about 8-10 ft. Although it does depend on how fast the person is walking, if they are loaded with stuff or if you are feeling patient and generous. I hold the door if they will be there in five or so seconds.

If they are within like 10 feet I am not good with distance but it also depends on the weather and if they have children.

Usually about 5 to 10 feet. Unless it's an older or disabled person, and then I will wait longer.

If the person is a few steps away, hold the door. If they are across the pking lot, go in. Do what your gut tells you at the time. :)

If there are headed towards me, I'll hold the door, even at 25 feet. If they are behind me at least 25 feet, I wont.....

I use the rule of thumb.
A thumb is about 2 and a quarter inches.
