Actually, The Main function of Capillaries, is so that nutrients can diffuse across it. In the lungs and muscles, O2 CO2 and wastes are exchanged through the capillaries, same goes for the Placenta, the mother must be able to exchange nutrients and oxygen to the fetus so the thinnest blood vessels make up the placenta, which are the capillaries.

Basically, the capillaries are the thinnest blood vessel, then veins, then Arteries. Capillaries are thin so nutrients can be exchanged. The lungs have the aveoli that get the oxygen and get rid of the Carbon Dioxide because it is in proximity to the capillaries thus making it possible.
