The old cast iron pipes had bell and spigot ends. The spigot fit inside the bell, the space was packed with oakum, then melted lead was poured on top to complete the seal. Now rubber gaskets are slid over the spigot end before it is inserted into the bell. If you need to have any of it replaced, the plumber will use PVC and no-hub clamps. The clamp is about four inches long and is slid over the end of one of the pipes. The pipes are aligned and the clamp is slid to cover both ends, then tightened.

Those older houses most commonly used cast iron for the main drain pipes, if yours is cracked and leaking i would recommend not to have it welded but to purchase a product known as JB WELD available at most hdwes or LOWES or HOME DEPOT......with this product you will be able to repair the crack yourself and it will outlast the house or your lifetime, and only cost you a fraction if you were able to have it welded.....you can do it !!!
