Wax myrtle is a fast-growing shrub that is native and does well in poor soil conditions. It can get quite large if not pruned frequently. Ligustrum is another evergreen shrub that grows fast and is dense. It does not require alot of pruning and is not prone to insects or disease. If you are looking to make a hedge, you could also try Indica azaleas. They grow large (6 to 8 feet) and fast. They require alot of water in the summer if they are in full sun. You can buy any of these shrubs in one gallon size and they are inexpensive. Privet makes a good hedge as well. Forsythia is not a good choice because it is deciduous (loses its leaves.) There are alot of choices, just make sure you have enough room for the plant to grow in the area you plant it. Good luck.

I would plant a shrub rose, Rose of Sharon, Burning bush hedge-turns red, 'Crimson King' Rose hedge, Rosa Rugosa Hedge, or Wall of China Hedge (which grows 3' the 1st year up to a mature height of 15') You can get shrub roses at QVC.com or 1-888-345-5788 or Michigan Bulb.

I may misspell this but autumolives fill the bill nicely. They bud out early, hold their foliage well into early winter and are excellent wildlife cover and furnish food for birds.
