It's all about supply and demand. Great Britain did not have the agricultural resources to grow cotton, therefore, they depended on the cotton products from the colonies.

After the invention of the cotton gin, prices went down because production went up. It's all about supply and demand.

demand in GB kept prices high before the civil war. when America fell into war the British had to go hunting for someone else to produce cotton... they found India... after america stopped fighting one another they had new international competitiors and the cash crop price fell
