Product means to multiply. Let N be your number then you can write the equation 8*N = 42 + 6.. or
8N=42+6
simplify the right side by adding..
8N = 48
divide both sides by 8
N = 6
your answer... now check it

8*6 = 42+6
48 = 48

The product is the answer of a multipication problem, and the sum is the answer for an addition problem, so if
42 +6 =48 what do you need to mulitply by 8 to get 48?

8*A=42+6=48
A=6

The number should be 6
