Ha....This is a very tricky problem. We have a lot of deer too and all my friends have tried everything scarecrows, tinpans, fences etc....nothing seems to deter the rascals except a gunshot every few days. No you don't have to shoot one but just shoot in the air. Their worst fear is man.

If you have plants that you are not planning on eating there are numerous sprays on the market that are designed to keep the deer away, one of these is called: Liquid Fence. Most home improvement centers will carry this or something similiar. As for your edible plants, fruits and veggies.... fencing is probably your only solution.

Jokeingly I say put up a fence but you might try the local plant nursery, a spray you would to do everyday or so. I had deer that kept eating my tomatoes, easy solution, don't grow the tomatoes and buy them at the store. You might also call your local college and talk to some one there depending on what they teach. They may have a agriculture department.

My parents have problems with deer eating their flowers. They take bars of the soap Irish Spring and make shavings and put the soap shavings around the flowers. I think that they just use an old food grater to make the shavings.

You can buy the 1" plastic mesh fencing by the yard at your hardware store and tack it up around your trees, flowering bushes and flower beds to discourage them from grazing in your yard. (Maybe they'll go to someone else's!) The black mesh is barely visible and you can staple it to posts firmly stuck in the ground as a temporary measure.
