According to the introduction by Mary Gordon,it is a novel-like memoir since her family had long emigrated to live in the USA, Ms Kingston herself was born in Stockton, California. Her parents were those among first-generation Chinese immigrants, she had to study and work hard to make it as a famed writer and lecturer at Berkeley and Harvard.
Note: The introduction is from a hardcover "The Woman Warrior/ China Men" published by Alfred A. Knopf in the Everyman's Library.
