I've made the crossing between Italy and Patras four times, though not all the way up to Venice. However, I love the crossing and though it's a few hours more, I think from Venice is fine. I've gone in and out of Ancona, Bari, Brindisi, and while the latter two are pretty South, Ancona's a bit up there. I've seen some of the clearest night skies on the crossings, including the Persiad meteor shower. Go shopping beforehand and bring a ton of food, some wine, and water. I've never had a problem sleeping on the deck, just clear a spot and lay down a blanket (though, some of the ferries have holding cells complete with bunkbeds and showers, so if you're really craving a bunk, get thrown in the brig for the night).

All in all, I really enjoy the crossing and would recomend you going on a deck ticket.
