The city houses many tourist attractions. The attractions include the Galveston Schlitterbahn waterpark, Moody Gardens, the Lone Star Flight Museum, a downtown neighborhood of historic buildings known as "The Strand," (hundreds of shops and resturants) many historical museums and mansions, and miles of beach front.
Galveston is also home to several historic ships: the tall ship Elissa at the Texas Seaport Museum and USS Cavalla and USS Stewart, both berthed at Seawolf Park on nearby Pelican Island.
You can go and ride the ferry over to Boliver Pennisula. On the ride you will see pelicans and perhaps even some dolphins. On some of these beach fronts, you will find "bunkers" where men were stationed during WWII to defend the waters from the German U-boats. This is also a great area for bird watching.
You can go inland and go wander around the Kemah Boardwalk. Yes, there is one here despite other postings. There are games, rides, and other attracions (besides the resturants) to choose from here.

Of all the times I've been to Galveston, I've NEVER done the Moody Garden's thing. I think I was turned off by the whole eco-rainforest thing. That being said, I have done lots of other things there. Since you're in Galveston, spend a little time at the beach. There are miles of them along the Gulf side of the island! My wife and I enjoy going to the Strand. Most of the buildings are from the 1890s era (and some built right after the 1900 hurricane), with wrought iron balconies/roof work. Lots of neat shops and unique restaurants. For fun, there's a burger place with its own waterfall. The kids will like that, and the seating is outdoor.
Hey, ride the trolley system for a buck. Just a thought.
Seawolf Park and the USS Cavalla (Gato class WWII sub on Pelican Island, neat military history stuff) AND/OR tall ship Elissa (on Pier 21) are worth looking at. Lots to do! Enjoy.

Schlitterbahn Water Park is brand new. The kids will love it. I think you can even take food and drinks in and save money. On the Strand, you may run into street performers playing violin and artists who will draw your caricature for about $5. Support your local artist. You can take your family on a Duck tour or a horse anf buggy ride. You can also take a tour of the harbor on a tour boat. Wet. On the ferry, you can bring old bread or french fries for the seagulls. Feed them from the back of the ferry. They will take it right out of your hand. The kids will love that. Watch for porpoises from the front of the ferry - upstairs is best. Tour the tallship Elissa. It's at the museum. **They have a great slide show on The Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900, but it is too explicit for young children.** If you are staying overnight, get a hotel room on the seawall on an upper level so you can see the water and stilll have a good peoplewatching spot. The historic Galvez Hotel is on the trolley route so you can take it to the strand and historical districts.

There are some wonderful historical sights (including a historical ship - the tall ship Elyssa (I think) - that your kids will probably love) in Galveston. One of the better known historical sites is Bishop's Palace 1402 Broadway (many of the historical places are on Broadway which is the main drag). If you are into black history, Ashton Villa is the place where the emancipation proclaimation was read, its part of the Galveston Historical Society. Check out the two websites below, they have good info. PS - also you may just want them to hang out on the beach and get seashells! Have fun!

Definitely...
you have to take a tour of the Bishop's palace or the moody mansion...they are beautiful buildings and i always go there...
Go to the strand and they have tons of cool stores and even an old time candy shop...you can see them make the taffy and they give out fresh samples...its so good..they also have alot of artists that do fantastic work
one thing you can't miss is the volcano explosion...it takes place at the rainforest cafe that's right on the ocean...it starts at sundown and happens every 30 minutes..its really cool to see...the restaurant itself is really cool
and of course you should go play putt-putt..go to the one that's right on the seawall...i dont remember the name but it has a ride next to it...it's the better one of the two putt-putt courses on Galveston oh and for great affordable food go to THE SPOT...the food is really good and cheap..
hope you have fun in Galveston!
P.S. check the galveston website for events that might be in town and directions to all these places
