You can take a car in for as long as your visa is good ... including FMT, FM2 and FM3. That's with US or Canadian plates and it can be for years/indefinitely

Switching it to a Mexican registered and plated vehicle requires an import broker. Registering a car in Mexico is expensive and insurance costs more ... so there's little reason unless you want to sell it.

You can take the car to Mexico up to 6 months. You won't be able to take it legally into Mexico permanently.

This doesn't mean that you can't, or that the methods to do this are illegal... they are just, how could I say this? Not entirely legal or transparent... I wouldn't do it...
