New York City

"In the 1920s New York City was a destination for African Americans during the Great Migration from the American South. By 1916, New York City was home to the largest urban African diaspora in North America."

I'll take a stab at it and say Harlem, New York. Is that a major city? The reason I say Harlem is because during the 1920s, that's where a lot of African Americans got their start in the arts - the Harlem Renaissance (that's where people like Loius Armstrong and Langston Hughes got started). I'm not sure if this was the first city, though...

It's been a while but I'll wing it. More than likely? The Carolinas. That whole general area. Further south than that experienced considerable Native American activity. For some reason there wasn't much of an influx in the North til after the Civil War. Yes there was some after the Revolution but I think in smaller spurts owing to former slave conscripts. The real mass ' exodus ' doesn't seem to have really taken off til after the turn of the century. I guess it's because people just willing to acclimate to the comparatively cramped life in the north as opposed to the demonstrably wider spaces all points south.

My best bet would be Baltimore.
I lived there for a while and I was most definately the minority. In fact, where I worked, out of 50 employees, I was the only Caucasian.
I might be mistaken, but it definately was one of the first.

I think Washington DC has the largest African American population.

I don't know what the first would have been.
