Luminescence occurs when visible light is emitted by some method other than a hot object. Three common types of luminescence include:

(1) Fluorescence
(2) Phosphorescence
(3) Bioluminescence

Other less common types include:

(4) Electroluminescence
(5) Mechanoluminescence
(6) Radioluminescence
(7) Sonoluminescence
(8) Thermoluminescence

It can have it's own light from a chemical reaction (light sticks)
It can absorb light and slowly discharge it (glow in the dark stuff)
It can reflect available light back to you from an otherwise unseen source, like the moon or a planet.

?????
I thought they were reflection, refraction and emission but I'm not sure...

Nooo... wait, I think it's bioluminescence(chemical),
thermoluminescence (heat),
electroluminescence (electricity),
and triboluminescence (friction)
but that's more than three...

Sorry! I guess that didn't help much...
