one of these nights when its clear i want to get out the telescope and look at some of the big gas giants but how do i know where to look?

www.heavens-above.com is another good one. or you can buy a program that shows you where they objects are in the sky. remember with a moderately sized telescope you'll only be able to see any details on two gas giants, jupiter and saturn. you should be able to se jupiter's moons and saturns rings though in even a small telescope.

You need to get a reliable online star chart. With that you can enter your zip code and then it will show you the positions of sky objects at any given time.
