I'm getting guitar lessons this summer, and I was wondering on which type of guitar I should start off first. I'm aiming to master the electric guitar.:D

Anyway, I've heard that the Acoustic guitar is a good way to start off, because it has the basics(or so I've heard).

Someone also said that the bass is a good way to start with.

I'm confused. Which one should I take?

Thanks! :D

Oh, and can you please tell me how long it will take to become a guitar expert? I'm 13 right now.

Okay..dude take it from me. I been playing electric guitar for 15 years. Dude. Start off with a acoustic guitar. this is because the strings are farther away to the fretboard neck. This gives you the confy grip.Plus, the strings are thicker which also builds strenth and aglity in your fingers which is really needed when you want to play hard complecated riffs. Electric guitar strings are closer...way closer to the fretboard neck. dont start from Bass guiatr. Who ever said that slap him/her soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hard.

You should probably start off with a cheap guitar. Price range should be like $150-$300. More than that is too complex for you. A good starter guitar, which i got when i started was a fender strat starter pack. Came with everything and very good. Later on you can get better guitars like Dean or Jackson..(i have a dean Razerback, Jackson Rhods, and i want a paul gilbert signature guitar.) Now it depends on which music type you want to play. My guitars are for stuff like Heavy-death metal. Fender is like Jimmi Hendrix, oldies those type of things.

And finally, it depends on how much you practice. If you are like me, when i started i didnt practice much until i realized i been playing for about 8 months and only know like 6 notes. So i started practicing for about 8 hours a day. I learned everything i need in 7 years. I dont know about you. Just practice practice practice. Plus....MAKE YOUR METRONOME YOUR BEST FREIND! NAME IT IF YOU WANT TO. You can always teach yourself and then go to guitar tabs www.ultimate-guitar.com and play your desirable songs there. But all this lead back to the thing. Are you motivated with your guitar? Do you love it more than your freinds and your video games, and other stuff? Do you want to play it because you want to look cool or you think the guitar is the most insane instrument ever? think about those too. Im not saying dont do anything else but practice. just saying have about a 2 hour practice time when your starting to play guitar. After 2 years go to like 3-5 hours and on on . Im not joking about this or making it up dude lol. Trust me. and good luck. And dont go to places like Wal-Mart to buy your guitar.

Hey! That's awesome that you want to play the guitar!

I play electric guitar, and I started out with the acoustic. Electric is definitely easier to play, and more fun, but I think it is a good thing to start out with the acoustic. Your preference.

About the bass...I can play the bass as well! If you learn to play the guitar, you can play the bass no problem, same notes, just less strings. Also, there aren't complex chords, just the notes.

So, I would definitely start out with the guitar, acoustic (how I started) or electric. You could always start with acoustic and then ease into the electric. It's all about personal preference. Learn to play the guitar, and the bass will come to you in a second!

Good Luck!

When I bought my first guitar, the guy that owned the local shop told me to start out on accoustic. Because the strings on an accoustic are thicker than an electric, you build strength in your fingers, which is a big plus for when you want to try some complicated riffs on the electric. Not needing an amp is a plus too, but there isn't a difference on what you can learn between the two.

As to how long it takes for you to get really good, that's not really something someone else can answer. It depends on how much you practice, how motivated you are, whether you have a natural talent, stuff like that. It's different for everyone. I've been playing for about two and a half years, and in my mind I still suck. I'm a slow learner though, but if I practiced more than I do I could be a lot better.

Whatever you choose, have fun, and stick with it!

it doesn't matter if you start off on an acoustic or an electric. However you should not start off on a bass if you want to play electric guitar. They play totally different. It's totally a different instrument. The thing with an acoustic is you can just start straight off playing it without buying anything else... with an electric you have to buy an amp and a chord. So anyways hope this helps. Oh btw... I've been playing for 12 years and I still am not even close to as good as I would like to be.

Start off with an acoustic....Once you master that, electric will come very easily.

As far as how long it will take, if you start @ 13 years old, you will be an excellent guitar player in about 5 years, depending on the amount of time you put into practicing.

It's always nice to see new guitarists with a passion to play. Good luck and don't get frustrated if you can't play something, just keep trying and eventually, it will come naturally.

Man I've been playing for a decade and I still ain't a master kid. If you wanna play electric guitar, get an electric guitar. A guitar teacher is good but try to learn on your own as well. It'll help you develop your own style. Check out this site.

Great video lessons and a great forum where you can ask all the questions you can think of for guitar. I'm magicninja on the forum.

Well, with Acoustic there is no need for amps or anything, so it's less hassle to start out with. You can learn the basics on an electric, the only thing that varies is the sound of both and the care they require. But if you like the electric better, I say start with that, they aren't really taught differently, note and cord wise.

start off with an electric if you want to play electric. There are all kinds of guitars, lead, bass, rhythm, and double necks, 12 string guitar electric acoustics and more. Have fun.

You get what you put in. You put in an hour a day every day, who knows? You may become pretty good in no time!

In my opinion, starting with an electric is easier. It'll definitely be easier on your left fingers and hand, 'cause the neck is slimmer, and narrower than the acoustic's. It'll cost more to start with an electric, however, 'cause you have to get an amp, cords, ets.

I started with a classic, and I wish I'd started with ELectric. It would have kept me intersted longer in the beginning.
