It takes the attention away from them. The person with low self-esteem will do things to others before they can notice the faults that they have within themselves.

Thats interesting. I read something about attraction/women/and evolution on this.
Especially wth men it's true (even thousands and thousands of years ago),
that they proove their worth or rank within a group or society
by "dissing" other men. Overruling others. The more they are able to do this the better they will look in front of females.
It's like a "male fitness-indicator"
that lets women percieve how confident/strong the male in fact is.

So if you look at for axample rap-music that evolved from
very poor neighbourhoods. Proving your selfworth
(though in a sportly fashion) by overruling others,
prooves that you are the boss, wich indicates you are the fittest.
Wich indicates it must say something about your character and persona that communicates to females you really must be sumpin... :P

Because proving your worth is very important cause human nature says so.
There are also fakers who cannot pick on the ones in their own maturity range and go pick on people who are less then they are. Just to feel that worth.

Empty heads have nothing inteligent to say. But lack the ability to be quiet long enough to learn either. They either end up(if they aren't already) working at a buger joint and, or living in thier moms basement, playing PS2 all day. Don't worry too much about them. It's the only way they can feel good about thier lot in life.

According to Sigmund Freud, a contributer to the development of psychotherapy, this is called "projecting". Its a defense mechanism that people in general adapt into their daily lives to help them cope with self-esteem or inferiority issues. Hope this helps.

It is easier to be the "funny fat girl" and point out others flaws and weaknesses just to distract others from seeing our own. That's what I did all the time when I was fat, sorry to everyone I made fun of, I was a jerk. I was afraid others would notice I was fat unless I pointed out other people but I soon realized people noticed me anyways because I was huge an making fun of other people only made me feel worse.

Some people try to feel tall by stepping on other people. Maybe if the others feel worse, then the getter-downers feel that they have it better than the victims they put down. Something like that maybe.

They may see in others what they don't like about themselves and dragging someone else down helps them not to have to face their own short comings -- Which is very selfish on their part -

most of the time you put someone down because you don't like them for one reason or another, not because of low self esteem.

Because they need someone to fee their pain, basically.

Don't think too much of it.
