Lenin and the Bolsheviks promised an end to the war. The Bolshevik coup against the Provisional Government of Oct. 1917 (according to the Julian calendar) or Nov. 1917 (according to the Gregorian calendar) gave the new Soviet government power to conclude the treaty of Brest-Litovsk, whereby Russia left the war. Germany occupied large areas of the Ukraine at once. Germany shifted units from the Russian to the Western front. That helped the German war effort in the West. The U.S. and Britain worried about whether Russian war materiel (Yes, that's the correct spelling) might fall into German hands and be used against the Allies. U.S. and British forces invaded Russia and occupied Archangel, Murmansk, and Northern Russian areas to prevent this.
