I've written an essay and it was corrected as wrong article in "a special friend".
Can't understand why.
I've learned to put "a" before consonants and "s" is a consonant and it's pronounced.
It's not like "hour" where the "h" is not pronounced.
Can you clear my doubt, please?

Thanks to all of you who sent me the answers

This is the transcription of the essay and the way it was corrected.
The "n" you see was placed by them.(from an English course on-line)
I didn't have the chance to ask about that because the period of 14 free days was over.
I will try to contact them anyway.
Here it goes:

My best friend is the one who's always ready to help me anytime I need them.
No matter if it's late at night or they are on the go. My best friend always has some minutes for me. You may think I must be kind of crazy or something like that, but I am not. I don't have a n(D)(>>) special friend on earth. Everybody is a n(D)(>>) special human being for me for they fill my life with joy. Since I act the same way to them, I assure they can also see their best friend on me.

"A" is correct. You are absolutely correct that the "AN" goes before a word that either starts with a voewl or a vowel sound (as in your example...hour). I'm not sure why you would have gotten that wrong...interesting.

a special friend.

An hour.

Basically it has more to do with the way the letter sounds. A consonant sound gets an 'a' before it. A vowel sound, regardless of if it's a consonant or a vowel, gets an 'an' before it.

I agree--should be "a special friend." By any chance, did the teacher intend the comment to be directed at another area or section?

you would use a because an is only used before a vowel.
[e.g. AN Apple a day keeps the doctar away]

You are correct. It is "a", not "an". However, what is the complete sentence? Perhaps it's something else?
