As a child in the 50's and watching the first episode, when the show first started, being gay meant being happy and that was all.

Gay means happy, colorful, and/or homosexual. Back then, they said gay instead of happy. I remember watching an old Bugs Bunny cartoon. What's-his-face, with the shotgun was in therapy (his "doctor" was Bugs) and was asked on a chalkboard, "Was your childhood gay or sad?".
There's your answer.

I don't think they were the first... I mean, weren't Bert and Ernie around before the Flinstones? If they weren't gay, then neither is Boy George!

I really hope you already know the answer to this. As has been stated numerous times, 'gay' really means 'happy', not 'homosexual'.

If you were educated you would have realised that Gay old time means Happy old time.

Yes, but the television networks weren't allowed to show that sort of thing on screen back then either.
