A pig cannot sweat so in order to cool down they need to wallow in the mud or better yet water to swim in. Pigs are very smart and believe it or not they try to be clean, its the humans that have made them dirty pigs. If given a choice between water and mud, most pigs will choose water. At this park by my house they have a barn and the pigs have a sprinkler and play in there and not the mud.

Rolling in the mud gives them a protective layer that helps protect their skin from the hot sun. It keeps them cooler that way. Very smart idea for a pig to have if you think about it.

Pigs are unable to sweat, so in order to lower their body temperature they roll in the mud to cool off. Also known as homeostasis- keeping a constant internal body temp. Some organisms are able to regulate body temp. as an involuntary response (their body tells them they're too hot or cold and they respond automatically) For example: people sweat to cool off, and shiver to warm up.That's how pigs do it.

Not only keeps them cool but prevents flys and other parasites off of their skin, which is very soft and vulnerable.
