First of all...have you done your research OR checked out prices of these animals needs? I imagine you have to know about odor control because you are relying on your parents...am I right? Well...first, check out your local pet store OR this website to see if you can afford a ferret: http://www.ferretdepot.com

Cheaper is not always better...you will need a cage with at least 4 levels in it. There is a nice one at ferretdepot for about 120-130 bucks. You will need at least 3 litter pans. One for inside the cage and 2 for outside where you will let your ferrets run around and play. And yes...I said ferretS. It is important for your ferret, physically and emotionally, to have a ferret friend. You will want to start saving money so that you can buy 2.

There are many other things about ferrets that you should know like proper care, diseases, "ferret-proofing" your home, etc. You can find all this information and much more at: http://www.ferretuniverse.com

As far as reducing or eliminating odor, this is what you have to do: Scoop litter boxes twice daily, completely change litter pans every 2-3 days, change or wash bedding ever 2-3 days, give the whole cage a good scrub with hot soapy water once a week. If you are a responsible ferret owner you will do all of the above and have very little odor to worry about.

Good luck in your decision!

When ferrets are put out for adoption at an early age from commercial breeders they are neutered and descented. Unfortunately, this same breeder makes a dry food for ferrets and that causes a smell. Ferrets should never get frequent baths, only when they have gotten dirty, been ill or something of that nature. When you bathe a ferret too often, his little body goes into preservation mode and over produces oil. I have had up to 15 ferrets at one time and I can tell you that they don't have an odor any worse than a dog. It's all in what you feed them, how often you change their bedding, etc. A ferret is not a simply pet to have and require a lot of attention if you are going to be a responsible pet care giver. Also, prepare to have money set aside for a qualified ferret vet, they are not readily available, something you might want to check out in your area before you obtain a ferret. And might I suggest that you check your area for a ferret rescue where you can be matched with a sweetheart that agrees with you. The shelter operator can and will gladly give you advice. Good luck.....they truly are the greatest little sweethearts and worth every bit of care you can give.

There are many things you can do about ferret odor. First off, do not bathe them frequently, as this causes their glands to overproduce natural oils in their skin, causing a smellier ferret. Once a month AT THE MOST. They also sell sprays specifically for ferret odors at pet stores. You could have your ferret descented, but I find that an uneccesary health risk. Keeping the bedding and litter boxes clean will also cut down on smell. So will cleaning the ears, as ferrets are prone to ear mites which might cause them to smell some. Good luck with your new fuzzer. I recommend reading Kim Schilling's "Ferrets for Dummies." It will tell you everything you need to know about ferrets.

I owned two ferrets and found it very hard to stop the smell. A lot of people keep them in a garage or shed but I don't recommend that if you live somewhere cold. Orange zest actually helps and will keep any cats away too but there are some pretty nice smelling shampoos available for ferrets. Good luck, they are such sweet pets and smart too! They commonly eat cat food and use a litter box and act a lot like a dog.

There is something called a de-scenting shot the Vet will give your ferret to make them not quite as smelly. It reduces that classic ferret stench.
