forget #2, go for #1. Do you have your #'s (banks) right?

Rotate the engine by placing a socket on the bolt holding the harmonic balancer till you see the mark on the harmonic balancer match the zero on the timing tag. Check to see if the #1 cyl is now up. If not rotate it around again cause it was 180 deg off. Now ,do you know where #1 spark plug wire was on the ditributor/ You still have a rotor button on a HEI ign and with the cap off drop it in. The rotor button should be pointing at about 5 o'clock on the distributer cap. Your firing order is 1-8-4-3-0-6-5-7-2 on a Chevy, right?Facing the engine from the rear #1-3-5-7 is on your left. #1 is in the front &7 is at the back The r / s is #2-4-6-8 with #2 in front and # 8 in the back. All cars and trucks are described as r / s and l /s by siting in the drivers seat Drivers side is left and passenger side is right

I hope I am undestanding your question.

Here's what must be. Cylinder 1 at top of compression stroke, harmonic balancer timing mark on 0 and distributor rotor contact facing the number one contact on the cap.

Anything else and you are out of time.
