There are facilities that have children with mental retardation at different levels.
I visited one school/work facility that manufactured bandages for the American Red Cross. The people are children of adult age. They have limitations. Some have more limitations than others. One young man had the same problem as the disabled person in the movie Rainman with Tom Cruise. He could tell you what day of the week you were born by just giving him the day, month and year of your birth. Amazing. He worked to empty the trash consistently for that organization. However he could not think enough to ask if it was ok to come into the meeting, and empty the trash while I was there.
The other manager conducting the meeting apologized. He said the clients/workers are very consistent, and it would upset him if he and others are told not to do their work.
I said this is his place, not mine. I'm just a visitor. Please let him continue.
They only receive a few dollars for their "work" which is really skill training, but they look forward to their paycheck so much.
1. They can learn, especially easy repetitive skills.
2. They can learn to work in teams.
3. They can learn consistency.
The problem is mainly that they cannot think if there is a disruption in a routine. It takes others to manage their time and skills.
They are very dedicated workers.
They are very loving people, and many times reward team members and management with hugs.
I was sorry to leave the facility because I was verifying that this was the end of the contract. They made the bandages for the American red cross, and they were for dessert storm.
They are located in the Philadelphia, PA area.
GOD bless us one and all, always.
