No, I can't stand them either. They're so enthusiastic and positive and all-knowing, and you just KNOW they're full of it.
They give these pathetic examples of something incredible they were supposed to have done, which is meant to amaze you, but in reality, it just seems to add to the feeling of disgust more than anything else.

You are entitled to your opinion, but it appears you are missing the point. Why would someone pay to hear someone who never had any problems? He or she is living the easy life. A motivational speaker is trying to relate and provide hope to those who are struggling. They provide examples to show it is possible.
For example--if you attended an AA meeting--would you want to hear from the person who has been sober for two years or the person who never drank a drop? Hard to relate to someone who has no idea how hard it will be to become sober. Take AA out and put in anything else--same concept.

I agree. I always expect them to talk about living in a van down by the river like Matt Foley. They have never motivated me––well except to make sure I never have to be a motivational speaker.

I know what you mean. It takes a special motivational speaker for people to come out feeling their time was well spent. Everyone has had death, problems, and all kinds of disappointments in their lives and have overcome them. I especially don't like religious speakers.

Motivational speakers are a scam. At the end of one speaker's speech, he actually asked for a donation for his gas/hotel/food bill in the form of selling those rubber bracelets. If he trully cared about any other alcholic in the world he would have donated the money to them.

Motivational speakers bore me.
I wonder if they even follow their own advice.

I could not agree more. I go out of my way to avoid them.
I find my own motivations, thank you.

I've never found one that interested me that much. In fact, hearing people speak pretty well puts me to sleep.
