Or do you have to get some kind of license?

Unfortunately, ferrets are illegal to be kept as pets in the state of California. The reasoning behind this is illegitimate: they believe feral colonies will form and that ferrets are rabies carriers. If you do your research, you will find out the opposite is true. Ferrets would have a very difficult time forming feral colonies, as most ferrets are sold neutered/spayed and the breeding process for ferrets is a difficult one. Jills(unaltered females) will die if not bred. And since ferrets are indoor animals, it is unlikely that they will contract rabies, and you can look at statistics to prove this. It is also required in many states that they be vaccinated for rabies. And if a ferret were to contract rabies, it would more than likely be "dumb rabies," which means they die before showing any symptoms.

They are indeed illegal in California. That doesn't mean that they don't exist there, hence the items for them in your local pet markets. There are qualified ferret vets in California also. I might caution you that if you do get a ferret in California and someone reports it, they will confiscate the ferret and transport it out of state to a ferret shelter or worse. Be very cautious who you let know of your ferret.
