You computer vents are probably built up with dust big time. You need to clean them out.

My son in college had the same problem. He was using a can of compressed air to blow the air vents. The problem was he was blowing the dust back inside his computer. I told him to open up the case and blow the dust outside because the dust inside was making his computer run hot and so the fan kept coming on. When he opened it up it was coated with a layer of dusk. After blowing the dust out his computer was quiet as a baby sleeping.

Is the harddrive light on? Meaning that something is downloading or scanning? If this is a louder noise than heard before your harddrive may be on its last leg. Do a test on it. Hope you have backed up all your important files. The question is always when will the harddrive fail---not if.
The noise could also be a fan that is speeding up because of increased heat or a problem fan.

How much free space do you hace on your C drive? How long since you defragged? Both of these can cause excessive read/writing, IF it's the hard drive. If it is indeed the CD drive, you might have a virus. How good is your protection?
