why does a man's pride cloud his better judgement?

my bf is facing charges against him and instead of ratting out the boy who started this mess he is willing to go to jail for a long time. i care alot about him and do not want him to go but how can i convince him to stand up and say something rather than go to jail. what should i do

sounds like its the ole good ole boy code " don't snitch on kin or friend". until he comes to the realization on his own he will not listen to anyone else & pay for someone else's doing's.
