Try to find any acting classes at a local community college. Audition for plays get involved in the theater anyway possible. Once you are involved you'll be able to learn from others about the busines, you'll be able to network to learn about auditions and opportunities. Acting is doing and as the previous poster above said, it is a craft, you must grow, you must never stop training and learning. .

I'm not going to tell you to go to a school or take a workshop. I did all that and, while I loved it and learned so much, it isn't for everyone. I suggest you do two things.

Join a theatre group. Or start one. I don't care where you live, there IS a community theatre somewhere around you. Go there and audition. When you aren't in a show, you should work on the show as an assistant, techie, anything. Get involved with whatever you can. You'll learn so much just by doing. And don't be afraid to make mistakes.

And two. (This is a lot of work). Read everything you can. EVERYTHING. Especially plays. Get to the point where you can read a script every day. Be familiar with as much theatre as possible.

Break a leg!

but you should take lessons or do community theater. develop a second talent like singing, dancing, or an instrument .

you wont know if an agency is good until your with them or unless you know someone with them

First thing you should do is TRAIN. Contrary to popular belief, acting isn't something that you just sort of DO...it's a craft that you learn over time.
