Describe how mental retardation is different from learning disability?

Mental retardation has different levels.
Some progress to only a certain child's age development, regardless of the number of years that they actually are.

Some have physical disabilities as well.
Some can learn repetitive tasks.
Some cannot except for very easy tasks.

A learning disability can be recognized by various doctors and in many times can be overcome, and the individual can become a fully functioning, self-supporting adult. It may mean extra work for the person, but they can learn to function.

look at the definition in the dsm book.....to be classified as being learning disabled the biggest thing that parents, doctors, educators miss or fail to mention is the fact that the child "must be at or above the norm for IQ" a child who is mentally retarded has an iq that is below the norm(100) at a significant amt. and there are verying degrees of mental retardation.....
mild iq of 75-50 can function somewhat in society

moderate iq from 50-35 can do some things normally live in group homes with much supervision

severe iq from 35-20 can do some daily living skills normally live in group homes with an enourmous amt of supervison

and profound iq under 20 with this group continous assistance is needed

This is a laymans answer , but I think mental retardation one is born with , learning dis-abilities are invisible dis-orders! In other eords , retardation can beproven ,contrary to the leraning dis-able , where the teachers or parents go by what they see in the child, actions, behaviour , focus[a modern word that blames it all!] so this is a big busisnes between the schools and the drug companies , they are drugging thousands of children , some as young as 4 yrs old , because of these so called -learning dis-abilities , like not sitting still for 2 hours while the teacher is talking , repeating words , writting the b like an f!! Bologna, I believe this is a way for the schools to make money , at childrens expense and the profit goes to the drug cartels! this is all legal! Would u believe it? Why is is that only in America[the U.S.A.] where the drug companies rule , so many maladies are being found and names daily to drug our children??? Mental retardation , or other physical disabilities are something else, deaf, mute , blind, cant walk, these are what disabilities are really for ,the law was made for these, but now all kinds of personality problems are called disabled!!! I believe it is the IQ scores. A person with mental retardation has an IQ below 70 and a person with learning disabilities has high scores on some areas of testing and low scores in others.

Mental retardation, is primarily a severe brain malfunction due to brain injury or perhaps maternal alcoholism. affecting normal daily life such as speech, holding a job, cooking food and living independently.
Learning disability, is when you have a slight or moderate learning problem, such as dyslexia, this is the inability to read as the words appear mixed up like a crossword puzzle. you can communicate and live a normal life you have a disability when it is in reference to learning a specific thing. Math, reading etc....this can be remedied by different teaching methods.

Learning disabled individuals have normal or above normal IQs, and the testing profile is uneven. MRs are delayed in all elements of development, and the testing profile is flat (all aspects of development are equally delayed)
