Depends on how you will use it.
For my business use I have had great success with Toshiba Tecra and Satellite series. The Tecra M7 convertible tablet/notebook is seriously cool and seriously great--with a serious price tag.
For just goofing off, web, and email--buy the cheapest thing you can get at Best Buy and purchase their protection plan and service plan--they will fix or replace it as many times as you need.

I bought my Inspiron 1000 laptop from Dell 2 1/2 years ago and had,no problems with it. I did buy a Gateway laptop (m3210) last January and I hated it,it would crap out during intense graphic work, I promptly sold it and continued to use my Dell until I bought my Toshiba a few months ago. My new laptop is a Toshiba Satellite m115-S3154 duo core, dvdrw, media card reader etc. I haven't had any trouble with it and it is really good on battery and for gaming and such. I recommend Toshiba but Dell is also a good computer. Also keep an out for rebates and sales. Good Luck.

You should get a Toshiba Satellite notebook. Most of them now have Windows Vista. I have a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 SP2 and 1GB of memory, and I really like it. My computer can handle Windows Vista Ultimate, but I'm not going to upgrade anytime soon, because Windows Vista has too many problems.
