A set amount of resources (food, shelter, hunting grounds, hiding places, etc) and a species that is reproducing. The individual organisms that are best suited for their environment will obtain the most and the best resources, enabling them to reproduce and pass on their genes (which helped them succeed) to their offspring. As individual variations/mutations arise that lead to that individual being more successful then their offspring will inherit those traits that led to greater success. And vice versa.

1. Many more species are born than can possibly survive, and thus there is competition for limited resources
2. Within that vast number of offspring, there is a natural variation between individuals, in which some will be better competitors for the limited resources
3. The best competitors for the limited resources will have the best chance of survival, and if they survive, they will have increased their chances of reproducing
4. Those who reproduce are likely to pass on to their offspring their "fit" traits--those advantageous characteristics that helped them to be the best competitors for the limited resources
Be sure to never include: "create", "design", "plan"

wrong. the environment determines natural selection. you can not get a land based animal in a water based environment. by the same token you can not have a whale in the middle of a desert. certain animals will have a better set of skills than others. the animals that survive will be the ones who change and adapt to their surroundings. by the same token the ones that specialize in one skill or food in an environment will be the ones that die. the stress placed on a species environment will determine if any of them go the way of the dodo bird.

The idea of natural selection is that it happens by itself, and there is nothing that causes it
