I have a requirement to set up a simple, local, hotspot, mainly to provide a testbed and information source, so I just need to serve a few local pages, welcoming users, giving some information, etc. No onward access to the net, no billing, no user control.
To acehive this, I have a budget of about 50c, a spare PC (running XP, not able to change), a wireless router/access point and a lot of patience.

Has anyone been down this road before? Any hints/ tips? Or ready-made solutions :-)

Just make sure your PC is protected with a firewall if there's a live wireless connection (to stop someone hacking into your PC)

Too bad your stuck with XP - if you downloaded Ubuntu Linux (its free) all the tools are there to do this!

The server and all routing tools are built in and easy to use.
Otherwise you will need
a webserver IIS or Apache (apache is better)
a routing method to auto redirect your logins to the web server (server 2003 has most of that built in - for a price)
and all your webpages

Buy a Linksys or Belkin wireless router and just follow the instructions on the CD that comes with it.
