Is there anything today that could compare somewhat to say, Deadwood SD, or Dodge City, KS? Are there any places left on this earth in 2007 where there is a frontier feeling and a boom-town mentality? The type of place where there ain't much in the way of law and order, but boy are some people making money hand over fist.

1] Serra Pelada, Brazil - gold;
2] small towns in the interior of Sierra Leone - diamonds;
3] Golden Triangle: Laos, Thailand, Burma - drugs.
There are probably more, but these 3 leapt to my mind.

Fort McMurray Alberta AKA "Fort McMoney" is most definitely a frontier boom town. People there are mostly too busy making money to get violent though.
