When Jason sailed on the Argonaut to capture the Golden Fleece, he had to pass through the islands where the sirens sang. Their song was so beautiful that any sailor hearing them would steer his ship in their direction and wreck on the rocky shore.

Jason and his men bound themsleves to the masts of the ship so that they would not go mad and steer their ship aground. It worked, and they made it out alive.

If you've ever heard the term "siren song" used in reference to something particularly alluring ("I couldn't resist the siren song of a chocolate eclair"), this is where it comes from.

I think the sirens were on a rock near an Island that the goddess Circe lived on. The full myth is in "The Odyssey" by Homer. If you don't want to read it then rent the movie. Hallmark entertainment did a movie that available on DVD in most movie stores to rent or try netflix. It's callled "The Odyssey" and it has Armand Assante, Bernadette Peters, Vanessa Williams and Gretta Scacci.

I think Mel has her stories mixed up. (No offense).

The Sirens are mermaid-like creatures who sing beautiful songs to lure sailors onto rocks where they crash.
