The 6cylinders have more torque usually than the 4. They also have more HP. So when you are going up a hill, the 6 cylinder is under less strain, less strain equals less wear and tear. I would go with the bigger engine, they will be worth more when you try and sell it.

If you plan to tow a boat or trailer, you will notice a big difference between the two, the power/ tork ratio of the 6 will be a huge advantage, for every day driving the 4 cyl. works just fine, little less power when you hit the gas hard (highway situations and such )
Some of the most renowned sports cars in the world use 4 cyl motors,, of a higher quality than Toyota offers of course.

From experience, if you drive local areas with fairly small weights, or travel a distance, a 4 banger is cool. But, if you do more than above, or like to REALLY 4X4, very Lil' competition out there. A 4 is economical, basic small 4X4 terrain. A 6 banger really moves you up to 1st Class for most everything. A 8 is awesome, but not really practical unless a large boat, or weight is an issue. Personally, give me the 6 anytime !! Good Luck !!

Not only do you have more torque when you have more cylinders, but you also burn more gas. Just as an example, a 4 cylinder vehicle may get 20-25 miles to the gallon where as a 6 cylinder might only get you 15-20.
