The masters series (there are 9 of them) and the master's cup (where only the top 8 players in the world compete). Ususally, the more the tournament pays, the more "important" it becomes. Here they are, ranked:
1. Master's Cup
2. Sony Ericsson Open
3. Pacific Life Open
4. Madrid
5. Cincinnati
6. Canada
7. Rome
8. Hamsburg
9. Monte Carlo
10. Paris
Out of these, the Master's Cup pays the most, followed by Miami (Sony Ericsson), Indian Wells (Pacific Life), and then the rest of the masters, which all pay the same.
NOTE: These are only the masters for the ATP, the WTA also shares some of these masters, but not all.

The Master's Cup and the Pacific Life Open are probably the biggest because the master's cup is the end of the year event where only the top 8 players ago, and the Pacific Life open is sometimes considered as the 5th grand slam. Others that are pretty important are Dubai and the Sony Ericcson Open.

There are 9 Masters Series Events for the men's ATP Tour.
These are one step below the Grand Slams.
It is only allowed for the players to miss two of these, I believe, without penalty. The Sony Ericson Open in Miami is going on right now, the second of these tournaments!

Aside from the four majors (Australian, French, U.S. and Wimbledon), the men's tour has nine "Masters" events that all of the top-ranked players are obligated to enter:
Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Hamburg, Canada, Cincinnati, Madrid, and Paris. There is also the year-end "Masters Cup" championship in Shanghai.
On the women's side, it's a little less clear which ones are the most "important", but the ones that give away the most award money are the "Tier I" events, which are:
Tokyo, Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Berlin, Rome, San Diego, Canada, Moscow, Zurich, and the season-ending championship in Madrid.
Hope that helps.
