In the Oregon country the challenge was actually from Great Britain who under George Vancouver had spread down into that area (remember the Oregon territory was what is now the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho) The British were primarily involved in the fur trade under the auspices of the Hudson Bay Company. The issue came to a head in the election of 1844 where the slogan was 54 40 or fight which referred to the line of Latitude that the American settlers in Oregon wanted. The actually settled on a line south of that.

Great Britain--Remember the 54-40 fight and the battle over the parallel being 54-40 or the 49th parallel. The US desired the 54-40 line while Lord Vancouver representing Great Britain desired it to be the 49th parallel. The US won out.
