Why do children experience an increase of fears during the preschool years?

Okay, as my child psychology book is at home, and I'm not at home... if I recall, I think it has to do with being separated from their parents and the new experiences that they are opened to.

It could be a feeling of abandonment - feeling lost - or abused by other children and or by the teachers and parents

I believe it is called separation anxiety.
